SYNOPSIS
A tropical storm unleashes an avalanche in a poor neighborhood of Bogota, destroying the house where Marina lives, forcing her to journey back to the home she had left behind. The journey revives buried memories of her life in the countryside: the sudden appearance of guerrillas who threaten and kidnap recruits, later, paramilitaries who kill and set fire to he land, displacing those who live there. But Marina’s return also gives her a chance to locate another survivor from her family, her adoptet sister, and to rebild her life with this woman.
A new disaster throws Marina
to a journey back to her homeland
and the step by step recovery
of control over her life?
An Original Idea Gives Birth to Two Films:
Hilo de retorno (screenplay and direction by Erwin Goggel) 2020, and Retratos en un mar de mentiras (screenplay and direction by Carlos Gaviria) 2010.
These two films have been written and directed jointly and they both share the same actors, settings and basic situations.
A large part, about 40%, is different and gives an identity, logic, atmosphere, and unique meaning to the entire story, resulting necessarily in two very distinct “messages” and emotions for the viewer.
The main theme in both films is the violence endured by women and children in Colombia, a topic that is discussed constantly in the media but that we are never willing to take on seriously in this country. It is for this reason that we are now proposing another point of view on this important but neglected subject.
The films remind us of the displacement of civilian populations that typically takes place amid armed conflicts.
